Indonesia is considered a very religious country, the vast majority of the population is Sunni Muslims. When greeting or addressing someone, you must join your palms on your chest and bow slightly, which means showing respect for your interlocutor. If you are addressing a woman, say the word “ibu” before her name, and when addressing a man, do not forget to say “pak”.
Travel Tips
- In Indonesia, it is not customary to raise your voice or show your emotions in any way; such behavior can be regarded as disrespect and aggression. Residents behave calmly, speak quietly and are considered one of the most balanced peoples in the world.
- Maintain silence when visiting temples, squares and markets. Don't let your emotions get the better of you.
- In order to point to an object or person, point to the object of interest with your thumb, and do not forget to press your elbow towards you.
- If you want to greet a person with a handshake, do it with your right hand, since the left hand is considered “unclean” according to religious canons.
- In public places, people walk and have leisurely small talk. In accordance with religious worldviews, it is categorically unacceptable to show affection in public: kissing, hugging, and even holding hands. Leave such activities for a hotel or inn, when no one will be watching you.
- When going to visit, remember that there is no cutlery at the table, and a lying knife can be taken as a sign of aggression and the owner’s reluctance to communicate with guests.
