Gersoppa Falls

Gersoppa Falls is famous for being the longest waterfall in the world; it consists of four streams, the total width of which is 472 meters.

Overview

It should also be mentioned that Gersoppa is not only the longest waterfall in the world, but also the highest in India (253 meters). It is a point that magically attracts people, especially foreign tourists.

According to the figures, you can find higher waterfalls in India, but the subtlety is that Gersoppa falls straight down from the cliff, from a cliff, and does not flow slowly down the ledges, like another waterfall.

The Sharavati River, on which the waterfall is located, splits into four streams, each of which is named according to its character. One of the streams is called Raja - it falls slowly and majestically; the other is called Gorlopan - he drags along the bottom and throws down a mass of stones and makes a lot of noise; the third stream - Rocket - a large volume of water rushes at high speed through a narrow space among the rocks; and finally, the last stream is Rani (Queen), so named for its sinuousness, reminiscent of the movements of a woman in dance.

The Indians did not let such a beauty waste its power and in 1949 they built a power plant there, the most powerful in the country.

As a result, now Gersoppa usually looks completely different from the photographs from magazines, it is even difficult to recognize her, just a couple of streams flowing from a height. This happens because the river is blocked by a dam. It is opened only on weekends - for tourists.

In 2007, during the rainy season, the water pressure became so strong that the dam had to be opened to save it from destruction. People who were lucky enough to see Gersoppa at that moment say that there was no more magnificent spectacle.

Unfortunately, Sharavati then flooded several villages and destroyed many crops.

Experienced people recommend going “to the waterfall” from August to December - this period is considered the season of the best flow.
