Humayun Mausoleum

The Humayun Mausoleum is the tomb of the Mughal emperor, which, according to the architect who built it, leads directly to heaven. This is the first tomb in India with its own garden, so it is recommended to visit it for all tourists arriving in India.

Historical information

Humayug's mausoleum was built in 1571 by order of the wife of the late Mughal emperor. The architect proposed a unique design for the tomb at that time, which included a huge garden and pond on the territory of the mausoleum. This vision of the tomb was symbolic, since according to the Koran this is what the entrance to heaven looks like.

Gradually, the mausoleum was filled with tombs of the descendants of Emperor Humayun, and therefore it is sometimes called the tomb of the entire imperial Timurid family.

Architecture

The territory of the mausoleum is a huge garden, divided by many small canals into 36 squares.

Humayun's tomb is built of red sand bricks with the addition of black and white marble. The tombstone itself looks rather modest and is easily lost among all the splendor of the architecture that can be seen on the territory of the mausoleum.

Currently, Humayun's mausoleum looks more like a recreational park rather than a cemetery. Many palaces and pavilions have been built here, in which tourists hide from the heat while walking.

Visiting rules

Entrance to the territory of Humayun's mausoleum is paid. Ticket price is $5. There is a security guard near the entrance who carefully checks each ticket, so you should not try to get in for free. Free entry only for children under 15 years old.

In the gardens near ancient unknown tombs you can often see many beggars. Be careful - they may pester you or try to steal something.
