islands of sri lanka won at the World Travel Awards 2017, where she was awarded two prestigious awards: Asia's Leading Destination and Asia's Leading Adventure Tourism Destination. These awards were presented at a gala event held in the Indian Ocean in early July this year in the Maldives. The island of Sri Lanka was honored to receive these awards, competing alongside 47 other Asian countries. The event was attended by the founder of the World Travel Awards, Graham Cook, as well as the Deputy Minister of Tourism in the Maldives, Mr. Hussein Lirar. The awards were presented by Managing Director Mr. Suteish Balasubraman and Ms. Madhubani Perera, Directors of Marketing at Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau.
The island's Ministry of Tourism broadcast a video about the country on the big screen. State representatives also interviewed journalists from international and local media. The video showcased the richness of Sri Lanka and the island's appeal as a unique cultural heritage site with rich natural resources.
The event was an important moment of special significance for the development of tourism in Sri Lanka. It will help increase the prestige of the island and consolidate its status as one of the most attractive holiday and travel destinations in Asia.
The winners were selected using a special voting system that was transparent and impartial.
Sri Lanka also received an award for the hospitality sector. Sri Lankan Airlines has been selected as Asia's Leading Airline in the Indian Ocean as well as Asia's Leading Cultural Airline. Casa Colombo has become Asia's Leading Design Hotel and Hilton Colombo has been awarded the Leading Business Hotel Award in Sri Lanka. Other island organizations were also recognized at the event. Movenpick Colombo has won two awards as a leading hotel in Sri Lanka. Spence Travels won the Sri Lanka Premium Management Award, Taya Finch was named the island's leading travel agency and Habarana Lodge was named Sri Lanka's leading family resort.
